KOPWA, a contemporary Aged Care facility is subtly nestled amongst the lush landscape of greenery, next to the bustling Chatswood interchange and Lindfield.
In February 2021, KOPWA opened its doors, housing its existing residents in the newly built Greenstar facility and continuing to fulfil its ongoing purpose of providing excellent care and lifestyle to the people living in the northern suburbs of Sydney. This new facility is designed to meet the growing needs of the elderly community in the Ku-ring-gai area and has an equal split of building mass and outdoor gardens and courtyards.
KOPWA blends into the Roseville residential environment with interludes of concrete and glass windows establishing evidence of life and human connections, creating an atmosphere of warmth through masonry and natural, earthy appearances. Respecting the environment, KOPWA has retained several prominent trees, creating a focus in the communal spaces while planting leafy trees to visually link the landscaped courtyards. The large courtyard is a communal space to encourage outdoor activities for enjoyment. Contrastingly, the subtle use of deep window bays facing the courtyard is aligned to façade detailing and varying openings with privacy screens. Linking louvres also neatly integrate the façade to provide controlled privacy and shade.
Residents now live in the Stage 1 build with two above-ground floors, a basement with carpark spaces, a commercial kitchen where our in-house chef prepares fresh meals daily, and laundry services. We have large single and double sized bedrooms with private ensuite bathrooms. The bedrooms accommodate the new innovative beds chosen explicitly for their safety around the ability to be adjusted to high to assist care staff and low in reducing the risk of falls. Large windows allow residents to enjoy the view of landscaped gardens from inside their bedrooms.
KOPWA has preserved street frontage heritage-listed houses and will be restored to Management offices, a Doctor’s consultation room, a hair salon, and a wellness room. There are many breakout rooms for residents to either partake in the different activities or have quiet time with their visitors to promote inclusion and self-reflection. Handpicked wallpapers were chosen in each breakout room to create themes for reminiscence and relevance. There are separate dining areas to encourage social eating in small groups. The kitchenettes next to the dining areas are an extension to help promote residents’ independence should they decide to help themselves with coffee/tea or a snack. Alternatively, there is an operating kiosk and café away from the residents’ rooms that are open to residents and their visitors if they wish to emulate the experience of going to a cafe.
Each resident has a single large bedroom and a private ensuite. An inbuilt wardrobe, bedside table, a desk and a chair. Shelving on the wall allows residents to bring in their chosen trinkets for display. There is also a memory box outside the bedroom for residents to place treasured items for easy room recognition. There will also be dementia-specific secured beds on two separate floors with dementia-specific wayfinding signs and fixtures as part of our Stage 2 buildings.
Residents can feel safe yet comfortable sitting on ergonomically Australian furniture, carefully selected for its moisture-resistance and fire retardant qualities. The colour chosen in furniture compliments the different breakout spaces, dining, and rooms and provides visual comfort for those living with dementia.
